The Davidson Distinguished Lecture Series invites you to an exciting evening with guest lecturers Lisa and Laura Ling. While both of the Ling sisters have independently spoken at various events, this will be the first time that they have lectured together.
Lisa Ling is currently executive producer and host of This is Life on CNN. As the former field correspondent for The Oprah Winfrey Show, contributor to ABC News' Nightline and National Geographic's Explorer, Lisa Ling has reported from dozens of countries, covering stories about gang rape in the Congo, bride burning in India, the Lord's Resistance Army in Uganda, and the Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) gang in Central America among other issues that are too often ignored. Lisa is the co-author of Mother, Daughter, Sister, Bride: Rituals of Womanhood.
Award-winning journalist and TV and web host, Laura Ling has dedicated herself to exposing the world to critical global issues, including slave labor in the Amazon, women’s rights in the Middle East, and the energy crisis in Sub-Saharan Africa. She is the host of Conquered on Z Living Network, a series that profiles awe-inspiring people who have broken boundaries to achieve their goals. Her purpose-driven programming for Discovery Communication’s digital network, Seeker, has amassed tens of millions of views online.
In March 2009, while reporting on the trafficking of North Korean women, Laura Ling’s personal story became international news after she and her colleague Euna Lee were captured by North Korean soldiers along the China-North Korea border and held captive for 140 days. Together the Ling sisters documented Laura's experience in the memoir, Somewhere Inside: One Sister’s Captivity in North Korea and the Other’s Fight to Bring Her Home.

Logan is the best at what he does, and next week he's coming to Midland College for LitFlix.
The English Department's monthly LitFlix events continue next week with Logan, a fascinatingly self-aware look at how comics are adapted to screen. We'll be talking about how the film mimics spaghetti westerns, its handling of age and death, and why the film stands as a cinematic landmark for comic book films.
Logan will be screened Thursday, Oct. 24th. The evening will begin at 6:30 PM in AFA 138 (the Choir Room) with a free pizza party, a Halloween themed raffle and a conversation about the film. Please be advised that Logan is rated R for "strong brutal violence and language throughout, and for brief nudity."
