Midland College scholarships help students like Zayda Wakley.  She earned an Associate of Applied Science degree in Paralegal, which resulted in her promotion to become the court administrator for the City of Midland Municipal Court.

Through a Midland College scholarship, single mother Marisol Ramos obtained a Midland College certificate in Vocational Nursing and later an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Nursing.  She has now completed bachelor’s, master’s and post-master’s degrees in nursing and works as a nurse practitioner with Dr. Anjana Rastogi at Synergy Integrative Medical Clinic in Midland.

Isaiah Ramirez took advantage of a Midland College scholarship during the time he was enrolled in the College’s Firefighter Academy.  Once he began working for the Midland Fire Department, he continued to take classes at Midland College and graduated in May 2023 with an Associate of Applied Science degree in Emergency Medicine.  Today he is a firefighter/paramedic working out of Station 2 on the corner of Florida and Terrell streets in Midland.

Your gift to Midland College for Permian Basin Gives not only helps to make a difference in the lives of students like Zayda, Marisol and Isaiah, but also provides a skilled workforce that benefits all of us.

The Midland Young Leaders Challenge with General Tommy Franks is a two-day intensive leadership workshop for approximately 30 selected Midland County students who have just completed the 11th grade.  The workshop offers students the opportunity to learn and practice critical skills that will help mold them into tomorrow's leaders. Participants are eligible for $6,000 in scholarships that accompany the program, and can advance to the national leadership conference.

The focus of the workshop focuses on teaching students the “four stars of leadership”--character, communication, common vision and caring. Throughout the two-day workshop, panel discussions are led by a diverse group of local leaders, and students participate in speech and op-ed article competitions.

The workshop culminates with a reception and awards ceremony on Thursday, June 13 at 6:00 pm in the Allison Fine Arts Building Wagner & Brown Auditorium.  At the awards ceremony, four peer-selected speech and article winners are awarded scholarships of $1,000, $2,000, or $3,000. The “four-star” winner is then invited to advance to General Franks’ weeklong Four Star Leadership program later in the summer in Oklahoma.

The Midland Young Leaders Challenge celebrates the legacy of Tommy Franks who grew up in Midland and became a military hero. Franks achieved the rank of a four star general during his decorated Army career, which included many honors, including being awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

The Davidson Distinguished Lecture Series presents a lecture by José Hernández, former migrant farmworker turned NASA astronaut, barrier-breaking engineer, entrepreneur and inspiration for the Amazon Prime film A Million Miles Away.

This event is FREE; tickets are not required for General Admission seating.

Contact the Midland College Foundation, (432) 685-4526, for information about preferred seating opportunities for Midland College Distinguished Donors and Friends of the Series ($1,000 minimum donation to help support MC programs and services).

About José Hernández

NASA engineer José Hernández wanted to fly in space ever since he heard that the first Hispanic-American had been chosen to travel into space.

"When I was a senior in high school, I was hoeing a row of sugar beets in a field near Stockton, CA, and I heard on my transistor radio that Franklin Chang-Diaz had been selected for the Astronaut Corps," Hernández remembered. "I was already interested in science and engineering, but that was the moment I said, 'I want to fly in space.' And that's something I strove for each day since."

His hard work paid off. Hernández was selected as part of the 19th class of astronauts in 2004. In 2006, he completed Astronaut Candidate Training, and in 2009, he was a mission specialist on the STS-128 mission on board the Space Shuttle, Discovery.

One of four children in a migrant farming family, Hernández--who didn't learn English until he was 12 years old--spent much of his childhood traveling between Mexico and southern California depending on the season, picking strawberries and cucumbers at farms along the route.

After graduating high school in Stockton, Hernández enrolled at the University of the Pacific in Stockton.  He earned a degree in electrical engineering and was awarded a full scholarship to the graduate program at the University of California in Santa Barbara, where he continued his engineering studies. In 1987, he accepted a full-time job with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory where he had worked as a co-op in college. While at Lawrence Livermore, Hernández worked on signal and image processing applications in radar imaging, computed tomography and acoustic imaging.

Later in his career, Hernández worked on developing quantitative x-ray film imaging analysis techniques for the x-ray laser program. Hernández applied these techniques in the medical physics arena and co-developed the first full-field digital mammography imaging system. This system has proven useful for detecting breast cancer at an earlier stage than present film/screen mammography techniques. Hernández has won recognition awards for his work on this project.

He has also worked in the international arena where he represented Lawrence Livermore and the U.S. Department of Energy on Russian nuclear non-proliferation issues. During the astronaut application process, Hernández had to meet with a review board. That's where he came face-to-face with his original inspiration: Franklin Chang-Diaz.

"It was a strange place to find myself, being evaluated by the person who gave me the motivation to get there in the first place," Hernández said. " I found that we actually had common experiences--a similar upbringing, the same language issues. That built up my confidence. Any barriers that existed, he had already hurdled them.  Now it's my turn.”

Since leaving NASA, he served as the executive director of Strategic Operations at MEI Technologies in Texas. In 2012, he ran for the U.S. House of Representatives in the 10th California Congressional District.

Hernández recently received the 2016 National Hispanic Hero Award presented by the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute.

As CEO of Tierra Luna Engineering, LLC, José Hernández continues his long history in the field of engineering and space.

The Davidson Distinguished Lecture Series invites all to this special presentation by Dr. Abraham Verghese, New York Times bestselling author, practicing physician and Stanford University professor.

Verghese is a prominent voice in medicine with a uniquely humanistic view of the future of healthcare. He received the National Humanities Medal from President Obama, “for reminding us that the patient is the center of the medical enterprise.”  For 15 years, Dr. Verghese was Vice Chair for the Theory & Practice of Medicine at Stanford University.

Outside of healthcare, he is best known as a phenomenally successful author. His first novel Cutting for Stone topped the New York Times bestseller list for over two years, was translated into more than twenty languages and is being adapted for film by Anonymous Content. Amazon named it one of its 100 Books to Read in a Lifetime. In 2023, he published his long-awaited second novel, The Covenant of Water, which debuted as a New York Times bestseller, remained on the list for several weeks, and was the 101st pick for Oprah’s Book Club. Oprah Winfrey, who named the book among the top three she’s read in her life, was so taken by the story that she developed a six-part podcast series diving into the themes of the book through intimate conversations with Verghese. His memoirs include the award-winning My Own Country and The Tennis Partner.

Trained in infectious diseases and pulmonary medicine, he has long been a top thinker in healthcare. His TED talk “A Doctor’s Touch” has been viewed almost two million times, and is as meaningful now as the day he delivered it. During the COVID pandemic, his messages of appreciation, understanding and compassion for all in healthcare and inspiration on how we go forward were widely appreciated. He also speaks about the future of healthcare. He is co-host with Dr. Eric Topol of the Medicine and the Machine podcast, and he has long been a top thinker on how we marry cutting-edge technology to advance medicine with a focus on the physical patient. This dual-pronged approach, incorporating both an appreciation of technological developments and a profound commitment to the sacred relationship between doctor/caregiver and patient, makes him a leading voice in the discussion about what quality care means now and in the future. Dr. Verghese leads PRESENCE, a multidisciplinary center that studies the human experience of patients, physicians and caregivers. His warmth and vision as well as his world-class gifts as a storyteller make him a powerful speaker both to healthcare professionals and the patient in all of us.

Ticket/Seating Information

The lecture is FREE.  Tickets are not required for general admission seating.  Doors open at 6:00 pm; lecture begins at 7:00 pm and will last approximately one hour.  Preferred seating and pre-lecture reception and meet/greet with Dr. Verghese is available for Midland College Distinguished Donors ($1,000 minimum donation in 2024) and Friends of the Series.

The Phyllis and Bob Cowan Performing Arts Series presents Michael Feinstein as he brings to life Big Band Celebrations and the Tony Bennett legacy.  Supported by the Carnegie Hall Big Band, Feinstein pays a heartfelt tribute to the legendary Tony Bennett, bringing his iconic songs to life in a symphony of sound.

Free Event

Because of the geneous endowment bestowed to Midland College by the late Phyllis and Bob Cowan, this event is FREE.  Tickets are not required for general admission seating.  Preferred seating is available for Friends of the Series and Midland College Distinguished Donors ($1,000 minimum donation in 2025).  Contact the Midland College Foundation, (432) 685-4526, for more information about preferred seating opportunities.

About the Performance

The performance will feature hits such as "Because of You," "Rags to Riches," "I Left My Heart in San Francisco," "The Best is Yet To Come," "I Get a Kick Out of You," "Stranger in Paradise" and many more.  Feinstein's dynamic interpretations, coupled with the grandeur of the big band, will create an unforgettable night that honors the legacy of Tony Bennett in all its glory.

Michael Feinstein's close friendship with Tony Bennett adds a profound layer to this tribute, as their camaraderie brings authenticity and depth to each note performed.  Not only does Feinstein's masterful interpretation of Bennett's timeless repertoire pay homage to an era of classic songwriting, but it also preserves the rich cultural heritage that these songs represent.

The show also brings to bear the history of Carnegie Hall, which has been connected to the American big band for decades.  Icons from across the 20th and 21st centuries have graced the stage of Carnegie Hall, from Benny Goodman to Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong to Ella Fitzgerald and from Frank Sinatra to, of course, Tony Bennett.  A multi-media element of the show will help to bring this history to life onstage.

"Tony Bennett is one of the most enduring icons of the 20th century.  He has created a body of work surpassed by none." - Michael Feinstein
